“I remember when I was in college, I asked my father for a computer and he said I should figure it out,” he recalls.
Chilewe started off selling his meal coupons and used the proceeds to start a small business selling blank CDs to fellow students to buy his first Pentium III computer.
“I also bought my first block of 40,000 shares in a telecommunications company from the same proceeds. I still hold on to these shares because they mean so much to me when I reflect on the hard work that I put in to make my small business venture profitable,” says Chilewe.
This was the humble beginning of his “nothing is impossible” mentality which has helped him take on big challenges in business, against all odds.
He worked for his father and, after four years, he ventured into his own business, with a tissue manufacturing plant.
He hasn’t looked back.
He founded Chilewe Brands Global, a pan-African diversified company involved in financial services, manufacturing, agriculture commodity trading and commercial properties. The company makes $2 million a year and employs 20 people.
It hasn’t been easy. Chilewe says he had to overcome the fear of approaching successful businesspeople for partnerships and networks.
Where there is a will, there is way – without a spoon.
