What is a cavity?
A cavity is a hole in the tooth that occurs due to untreated decay. Cavities are known as an early stage of progressive tooth decay.
What causes cavities?
Cavities are caused by our teeth coming into contact with the acids in plaque for too long, causing the loss of minerals in the enamel.
Brushing and flossing can remove plaque, but if proper oral hygiene is not followed, the acids erode the enamel and cause openings or gaps called cavities.
What does a cavity look like?
A cavity appears as a hole in the top or side of a tooth. If left untreated, cavities will pass beneath the enamel layer of the tooth and affect the dentin and pulp layers.
This will lead to infections, abscesses, pain, and eventually tooth loss.
Who is at risk for cavities?
People at risk of cavities are… everyone! Each individual will have their own risk factors, such as oral hygiene, diet, genetics and dental history.
For most, reducing sugars and acids on teeth will reduce the risk of cavities in the future.
It’s important to talk to your dentist to assess your risk and focus on prevention. If you have chronic conditions that put you at high risk, you can increase your protection by using high pH dental products specifically designed to neutralize cavity-causing acids.
5 steps to avoid and prevent cavities
1. Brush your teeth twice a day
Brushing in the morning and at night before bed reduces the amount of food particles left within the folds of the top of your teeth, giving bacteria fewer food particles to consume.
2. Floss daily
Floss at least once a day, preferably before bed. Flossing decreases the amount of leftover food particles between the teeth, which reduces the possibility of forming interproximal cavities.
3. Limit sweet snacks
Reduce your usual consumption of sugary foods. The less sugar the bacteria are given, the less acid they produce.
4. Visit your dentist regularly
Visit your dentist twice a year for a deep cleaning. Even with the best brushing and flossing habits, there may be areas of teeth that are difficult to reach.
Regular visits to the dentist for cleanings ensure that hard-to-reach areas are thoroughly cleaned and allow a dental professional to examine your teeth for specialized recommendations.
5. Reduce your regular consumption of acidic foods
Reduce your usual intake of acidic foods. When the bacteria on your teeth are already producing harmful acids, it is best to avoid foods that help them.
