Underrated ideas for summer trips to Africa
Lately, I have been putting together a list of cool things to do in Africa during the summer. So, I will share with you some of these underrated summer travel ideas on this blog.
They include:
Tracking desert elephants
Have you seen desert elephants before? If not, you have to travel to Africa! Desert elephants are fascinating and these creatures have evolved to thrive in harsh environments. That's why you'll often find them in a safari setting.
For those who want to enjoy this activity, they should go to Namibia. In the arid landscapes of Damaraland, you can spot rare desert-adapted elephants. Don't forget to bring your camera while traveling, as you can get some amazing photos here.
Explore the rock-cut churches of Lalibela
Somewhere in Ethiopia lie the rock-cut churches of Lalibela. I recently came across them and wondered why they haven't gained much popularity. It is certainly one of Africa's hidden gems.
The Lalibela Rock Churches are 11 monolithic medieval churches carved into the rock. I haven't been here, but it's now on my bucket list and I hope to visit soon.
Go snorkeling
One of the things about Africa is that the continent has many bodies of water that are perfect for snorkelling. I would say that there is virtually no country in Africa where you cannot snorkel.
I always recommend snorkelling during the summer as it brings a certain sense of calm and peace. It is an activity to do and marvel at the wonders of the world. If I had to recommend it, I would say that Lake Malawi is a perfect destination for snorkelling. Snorkelling here allows you to see some of the most colourful cichlids in the world.

Hiking
Just like snorkeling, hiking is an activity that can be done in almost any African country you visit. I always look forward to hiking because it allows me to explore various parts of the country that I might never have known about if I hadn’t opted for a hike.
The Simien Mountains in Ethiopia are a perfect destination for trekking in Africa. As you hike through the mountains, you can see spectacular scenery and encounter wild animals such as gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and Walia ibex. Yes, these are animals you will only see in Ethiopia.
Attend festivals
You're missing out if you've never been to an African festival! Well, you can make up for it by planning to attend one this summer!
From the energy of the people to the vibrant colors, unique traditions and music, and much more, there is a lot to enjoy during any African festival. In fact, you should definitely witness the Gerewol festival in Chad. It is a rare cultural celebration of the nomadic Wodaabe tribe. During this festival, men adorn themselves in elaborate costumes and makeup to compete for the affection of women.
Another fun festival that you must experience is the Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu, Ogun State, Nigeria. People travel from far away to enjoy this festival. You get to experience the culture and fashion. I have never worn such colorful outfits as those worn during this festival.
Sounds weird and interesting? Plan to experience it this summer!
Go kayaking
I always say that one of the best ways to interact with the locals of any region is by kayaking. Of course, you wouldn't think I'd be willing to venture into uncharted waters without the presence of locals by your side.
It's always fun to kayak with the locals as you can hear funny stories and admire stunning scenery while doing so. One kayaking experience I always remember is paddling down the mighty Zambezi River, just below Victoria Falls. It was an exciting adventure!

Explore ancient ruins
I know Egypt is one of the first places that comes to mind when someone suggests exploring ancient ruins during the summer. After all, Egypt is famous for its Egyptian pyramids and mummies.
However, this summer we are going to change things up a bit and explore the ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe. This place was an important trading city from the 11th to the 15th century and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I can only imagine the fascinating stories I would hear while exploring this place.
Another fun and ancient place to visit is located at Sungbo Eredo. This place is said to have been the place where Queen Sheba traveled to visit King Solomon back in her day. It was a very fun hiking experience in Nigeria.
Take a hot air balloon ride
Although I haven't worked up the courage to get in one yet, taking a hot air balloon ride is on my bucket list. Many people recommend doing this activity in Magaliesburg, South Africa.
While preparing this list, I did some research and was impressed by the beautiful and serene landscapes of this area. It is perfect for watching the sunrise.

Climbing the dunes
Wondering where you can find dune climbing? Visit Namibia! Morning climbs up the red sand dunes of Sossusvlei offer stunning views, especially at sunrise when the colours change dramatically.
I advise you to visit this place with a camera, as you will not want to miss the memory of these views.
Hiking with chimpanzees
It's common to hear about lions walking, but I doubt you've heard of chimpanzees or trekking with them. I was very excited when I heard about this activity and its possibility in Africa. Yes, you can trek with chimpanzees in the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda.
Here you can watch chimpanzees swinging through one of Africa's oldest forests. Nyungwe also offers the chance to see a variety of other primates and rich birdlife.
Explore villages
People usually tend to stay in cities when visiting a new place, even in Africa. However, that is not a good way to enjoy a holiday.
The best way to enjoy your holiday in Africa is to immerse yourself in the culture of the region by visiting traditional villages. During these visits, you will learn about their customs, dances and lifestyle. Believe me, you may want to extend your stay.
